Budget Vetoes

Whenever the state Legislature sends the governor a biennial budget to be signed into law, it is all but guaranteed the spending plan will still go through some changes.

That is because Wisconsin's governor has what is considered to be the most powerful line-item veto powers in the country.

Gov. Evers had the choice of either signing the budget as is it was, using his line-item veto power and signing it or vetoing the entire thing. No Wisconsin governor has ever vetoed an entire budget.

For the current two-year spending plan, Gov. Evers decided to make 50 partial vetoes. In what was probably the most notable veto, the governor earmarked an additional $100 million in federal funding for public schools.

Local Dedications

I was happy to attend ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the dedications of the new Sevastopol School addition and the Fish Creek Beach renovations.

It was a pleasure to celebrate the pinnacle of years of hard work and dedication by members of our community.

The Sevastopol School District commemorated the completion of its community-supported project to renovate the school by replacing its oldest sections with modern facilities. These additions include a new drop-off loop and updated science classrooms and lab spaces.

I am optimistic that these renovations will provide new opportunities for students to explore science, technology, engineering, art and math education.

The block party at Fish Creek Beach marked the culmination of 14 years of additions and renovations. These projects include a new parking lot and wheelchair-accessible platform pier. It is my hope that these renovations will attract new tourists to explore our community and appreciate the beauty of Door County.
