Adopt-A-Soldier Fundraiser

Last weekend I attended Door County Adopt-A-Soldier's first annual fundraiser breakfast and BBQ. Adopt-A-Soldier is an incredible non-profit organization founded by Nancy Hutchinson that sends care packages to local servicemen and women serving overseas. Nancy started this endeavor nine years ago by sending a care package to her son's best friend who was serving in the Marines. Today, the organization sends out over 1,500 care packages each year. I am in awe of the work Nancy does and it was great to find out that so many in the community agree with me! It was so incredible to see so many of you there and see other local groups come out and support this organization.

Nancy Hutchinson has truly created an amazing organization!

WI Public Education Network Summit

This past Wednesday, I spoke on a panel with Rep. Chris Taylor (D-Madison) on issues affecting public education today at the Wisconsin Public Education Network Summer Summit. We discussed early childhood education, mental health services in schools and public school funding. I believe it is so important to have open discussions on these topics and it was wonderful to see the public so engaged. Later this session, I am excited to get to work with the Blue Ribbon Commission on School Funding, the bipartisan task force that I Co-Chair.

Here I am speaking at Wednesday's panel.

WI Commercial Ports Assn. Annual Conference

This week, the Port of Sturgeon Bay hosted the Wisconsin Commercial Ports Association Annual Conference. I'm very proud of the role our district plays in this organization and the conference this year was an incredible event. It was a wonderful opportunity to hear about all the progress being made at the local level all across the state, as well as receive updates from the state and federal level. The Port in Sturgeon Bay plays a vital and understated role in our local economy and we are also blessed with the Door County Maritime Museum, which plays a large role in local tourism. The Commercial Ports Association is a highly effective organization and an incredible resource for all districts with commercial ports. Thank you for having me and I look forward to next year's conference!

Lake Michigan Day

Earlier today, I was fortunate enough to attend Lake Michigan Day at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc. Lake Michigan Day is a gathering of organizations and individuals who have a vested interest in protecting and preserving Lake Michigan and our state's coastlines. There were presentations and panels on the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and updates on the Great Lakes Literary program. The most exciting part of the day was watching 1st district constituent Cathy Pabich be named one of the 2017 Champions of Conservation for her work with the Friends of Crescent Beach.

Congratulations to Cathy!
