Memorial Day Weekend

As we begin our long holiday weekend I wanted to take this time to recognize and acknowledge Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a day for for all of us to remember individuals who have died while serving in our country's armed forces. Memorial Day was originally named "Decoration Day" in 1868 following the American Civil War.

It is my great privilege to honor and thank those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and safety. I encourage everyone to take a moment out of their weekend to pay their respects to our country's heroes.

If you are traveling this weekend please travel safely and have a great long weekend!

Happy Birthday Wisconsin!

On Monday, May 29th, we will be celebrating Wisconsin's birthday! Wisconsin was the 30th state to join the Union on May 29th, 1848. We are all very lucky to live in Wisconsin, a state blessed with great people and beautiful natural resources.

I hope that you are able to enjoy all that Wisconsin has to offer this weekend.

New UW-Green Bay Engineering School

Last night, the Joint Committee on Finance voted in favor of approving a new engineering school for UW-Green Bay. This is a momentous step for UW-Green Bay and it will be a great asset for our area!

As our world becomes more technologically advanced, the importance of  science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or "STEM", related fields will continue to grow. Attracting and keeping students in these fields in Wisconsin is crucial. By providing UW-Green Bay with an engineering school, we are providing students with more marketable educations and skills. This will be great resource for northeastern Wisconsin!

I would like to thank Chancellor Gary Miller for his continued leadership on this issue.  The northeastern Wisconsin region is lucky have such an advocate for higher education. I look forward to continuing to work on improving the higher education in our area!
