Committee on Children and Families Votes on CBD Oil

This past Wednesday, the Assembly Committee on Children and Families, of which I am Chair, held an executive session on Assembly Bill 48 and SB 10. The committee voted unanimously to pass both bills. These bills pertain to the definition of tetrahydrocannabinols and the use of cannabidiol (CBD Oil). They will provide much needed relief and support to our most vulnerable.

CBD Oil is a natural, non-psychoactive marijuana extract which is used to treat seizures. These bills do not legalize medical or recreational marijuana. These bills legalize the possession of CBD Oil with a doctor's prescription.

Oftentimes families run out of options for treatment, and these bills will give them one more option, without fear of prosecution. I am very pleased that the first bills out of our committee meeting focused on a cause that will make such a big difference in the everyday life of so many. I look forward to voting for this bipartisan bill on the floor of the Assembly soon.

In-District Listening Sessions

This week I held three in-district listening sessions in Sturgeon Bay, Kewaunee, and Southern Door. These sessions are always valuable to hold as the budget is released. The Governor just released his budget and over the next few months it is in our hands to make changes as we see fit. Hearing from constituents at listening sessions is a great way to prioritize the goals of the people I represent.

I found this week's sessions very informative and appreciate the dialogue that was had. As this process continues, I will hold more listening sessions to update you on the process and the work I am doing to make this budget better for you. Thank you to all who showed up and I look forward to seeing you again!

Anaerobic Digester Informational Meeting

This week I attended an informational meeting on Anaerobic Digesters at the Kewaunee County Fair Grounds. I found the presentations given by the PSC, DNR, an DATCP to be incredibly helpful and clarifying. It was also wonderful to see so many of you there and I appreciated that the departments made themselves available to answer everyone's questions and concerns. As I have mentioned in the past, I believe that manure treatment systems have the potential to be a part of the solution to our groundwater contamination issues. My primary focus is on seeing that the DNR completes the process of writing new rules for manure management that are specific to our area and that these rules are tough enough to truly make a difference.

Eagle Scout Presentation Ceremony

I was proud to take part in the Eagle Scout ceremony for J.J. Vollenweider of Kewaunee last weekend. J.J. was recently accepted to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. I have gotten to know J.J. over the past couple of years and I can say that young people like him make me feel good about the future of our country.
