Committee on Children and Families Public Hearing
This past Wednesday, the Assembly Committee on Children and Families, of
which I am Chair, held a public hearing on Assembly Bill 48. This bill
pertains to the
definition of tetrahydrocannabinols and the use of cannabidiol (CBD
Oil).
This is a great bill that will provide much needed relief and support to
our most vulnerable.
CBD Oil is a natural, non-psychoactive marijuana extract which is used
to treat seizures. This bill does not legalize medical or recreational
marijuana. The bill legalizes the possession of CBD Oil with a doctors
prescription.
Oftentimes families run out of options for treatment, and this bill will
give them one more option, without fear of prosecution.
I
am very pleased that our first committee meeting focused on a cause that
will make such a big difference in the everyday life of so many.
Rural
WI Initiative Press Conference
Earlier
this week, the Rural Wisconsin Initiative, a collective of representatives from
rural districts, held a press conference to announce the new broadband
legislation. This legislation will provide essential benefits to rural
communities in the areas of healthcare, education and many more. I am proud to be a member of the Rural Initiative and the
value that it provides to the 1st District is immeasurable. I released
a statement regarding this press conference that you can read
here.

Sheriffs Visit Office
This
week, I met with the Door and Kewaunee County Sheriffs. We spoke about
important
issues coming up this legislative session affecting Sheriff Departments
around our state. It was a very productive meeting and I am always happy
to host our local law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line daily to
protect our communities.
Anaerobic Digester Informational Meeting
Next Monday, the 20th of February, an information meeting regarding
Anaerobic Digesters will be held from 1:00-3:00 at the Kewaunee County
Fair Grounds Expo Building. I believe that this is a great opportunity
to hear first hand from experts from the PSC, DNR and DATCP. I encourage
everyone to attend with an open mind in hopes that much of the
misinformation floating around gets resolved.
I
believe that manure treatment systems have the potential to be a part of
the solution to our groundwater contamination issues, but this will not
be a silver bullet. My primary focus is on seeing that the DNR
completes the process of writing new rules for manure management that
are specific to our area and that these rules are tough enough to truly
make a difference. This is what the people of our area have been
requesting for several years, and the process is well under way. While
treatment systems hold promise for the future, these new rules will
provide much more immediate relief to the problem.
