State Budget Update
It has
been a while since I gave you an update on the state budget and I wanted
to share where we are in the process with all of you. The Joint Finance
Committee, which is charged with writing the budget bill, will be
meeting next week to resume their work. There are several funding areas,
such as education and transportation, that are still left to be decided.
Future hearings will be publicly noticed and can be watched live on
Wisconsin Eye. While I do not sit on the Joint Finance Committee, I
will continue to advocate for the interests of our district and garner
support for funding needs in our region.
Passing
of a Local Hero
This week our community lost a true American hero with the passing of
Col. Tim Lawrie. I am grateful that this job gives me the opportunity
to meet people with whom I might otherwise never have crossed paths. I
am privileged to have called Tim a friend. Tim was a highly decorated
Vietnam War veteran, being awarded the Silver Star for bravery above
self and a Purple Heart. He went on to serve a key role in the planning
of Operation Desert Storm as Chief of Joint Operations at the Office of
the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was smart and funny, but what I admired
most was his unwavering sense of right and wrong. The last time I saw
Tim, he told me about the meeting with Gen. Collin Powell and Pres.
George H.W. Bush in which it was decided not to invade Iraq. I could
have talked with him for hours. After his retirement from the military,
Tim continued to be a voice for veterans in our community and a
passionate advocate for veterans’ issues. I send my condolences to Tim’s
family. They should be very proud of him as both a man and a soldier,
as should our entire community.
West
Nile Virus in Door County
Earlier this week, it was discovered that
a dead crow in Door County tested positive for West Nile Virus. While there is no
cause for alarm, the Door County Health Department urges residents to be
more cautious and take preventative measures to avoid the spread of the
disease. Here are several of their recommendations:
-
Limit time spent outside at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most
active
-
Apply insect repellent to clothing as well as exposed skin since
mosquitoes may bite through clothing
-
Make sure window and door screens are in good repair to prevent
mosquito entry
-
Trim tall grass, weeds, and vines since mosquitoes use these areas
to rest during hot daylight hours
