The Week of December 1, 2008

Legislative Session

Pursuant to 2007 Senate Joint Resolution 1, the 2007 Legislature is not scheduled to meet again in regular session for the remainder of 2008.

Session Summary. The governor has acted upon all the bills passed by both houses of the legislature, signing 242 into law, vetoing one, and partially vetoing three. The Legislative Reference Bureau has released Wisconsin Brief 08-5 detailing the executive vetoes made during the 2007-2008 Session and Research Bulletin 08-1 summarizing the acts signed into law for the 2007-2008 Legislative Session.

Governor's Office

Governor Jim Doyle signed a Global Climate Solutions Declaration at the Governors’ Global Climate Summit in Los Angeles on November 21. The declaration calls for collaborative action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create opportunities for growth in green economies.

November General Election Results

In the November 4, 2008 general election, all 99 seats in the Wisconsin Assembly and 16 of the 33 seats in the Wisconsin Senate were on the ballot. Preliminary election results indicate that the 2009 Wisconsin Legislature will have a Democratic majority in the Senate (18 Democrats and 15 Republicans) and a Democratic majority in the Assembly (52 Democrats, 46 Republicans, and 1 Independent). The Government Accountability Board will certify the election results on December 1.

Committee Activity

Because the final general business floorperiod of the 2007-2008 session has concluded, committees are no longer meeting to consider proposed legislation. They will, however, continue to conduct occasional meetings and public hearings on various matters such as appointments to boards and commissions, state contracts, and administrative rules.
